We have heard all about you, are you free to do a show or two? Being a dedicated performer with a mortgage to pay and a business to run my ears pricked up. More business and this time London based all I had to do was find a space in my busy diary to fit them in and the pounds would start rolling in. “There is no pay for these shows for charitable causes but we may be able to get you expenses” came the next sentence. Suddenly my ears started to droop. No pay blimey I already do about 12 charity shows a year I cannot really afford to do any more. Looking on the event as some free advertising and networking I agreed to do a performance for the excellent London MICE group, I met some wonderful people and made many contacts in the entertainment and corporate industry, from that came an invitation to perform for all the Big London Hoteliers and Banqueting Managers at a Thanksgiving party held by First Protocol, and so my association with Explosion Entertainments continued. People ask me how can you afford to do free shows, well the truth is. I cannot but I don’t look at it as a free show. Although I am lucky to be booked predominately by word of mouth I need to advertise to reach previously untapped commercial outlets and that is expensive. What better way to reach and impress a targeted audience than to showcase your work direct to the clients! But that is only one aspect of this multi faceted industry, I also get to meet lots of very interesting people at all the shows I have covered for Explosion Entertainments; they in turn have met and remembered me, hopefully for the right reasons. From them come bookings and the best form of advertising - word of mouth. What is more it is free. No matter whom you are, or what you do in life your skills and capabilities require practice to become honed. Once there we can all benefit from not only that practice but the opportunity to try out new material on a real audience. I am privileged to have a unique relationship with Explosion Entertainments. Not only a mutual respect for our work but I admire the concept that Explosion Entertainments seeks to promote. I can thoroughly recommend this avenue to aspiring performers both as a means of practice and to showcase their presence. If like me you are lucky enough to be already established in your profession then it is still a means of practice and allows the widening of your horizons to audiences hitherto undiscovered. Above all as an entertainer I enjoy my work, and I really do get that warm fuzzy feeling when I am able to do some charity based work and perform for people who perhaps could not otherwise afford to see me perform. Of course my mortgage comes first and it is wholly understood that my paid work comes first and will always take priority over charity events. So go on, why not get in touch with Explosion Entertainments and offer your services to help others. Who knows in the audience there just might be someone who knows someone who knows someone who knows someone…. you get the picture? Rod Newman International Professional Magician.
